The new album “…and the Sun” by Danish pianist and composer Frede Holger Thorsen marks a fresh chapter for the Kosmos Trio. Rooted in Nordic jazz and the classic piano-led trio format, the music seamlessly balances spacious melodies, rich harmonies, subtle grooves, and an ongoing dynamic interplay between tension and solace.
To capture this material, Thorsen assembled a new constellation of musicians. He recruited bassist Martin Brunbjerg after witnessing his performance alongside vocalist Nana Rashid, while drummer Jesper Lorup joined through a personal recommendation. The immediate trust developed within the group shaped their recording process: the entire album was tracked live in a single room to preserve complete focus, conversational immediacy, and organic flow.
The repertoire spans nearly a decade of songwriting, including the piece “Clairvoyance”—originally written in 2017 and inspired by a vision experienced by Thorsen’s father. Characterized by colorful harmonic landscapes and complex time signatures, the album balances darker, reflective passages with warmth and optimism, resulting in an intimate yet expansive sound.
