Despite its relatively small scope, the organ music of Maurice Duruflé (1902–1986) ranks among the absolute highlights of 20th-century French organ music. His music masterfully combines the Gregorian chant tradition with late-Romantic influences from his teachers Louis Vierne and Charles Tournemire, as well as with the impressionistic harmony in the style of Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré. To mark the 40th anniversary of Duruflé’s death, Winfried Lichtscheidel presents a complete recording on the grand organ of the Stadtpfarrkirche in Landsberg am Lech, which, thanks to its stop layout, is virtually predestined for the performance of these works.
