Montreal-based artist Somaya, who emerged on the scene in 2024 with singles such as “Rhinestones”, “Mary”, and the Childish Friend collaboration “SOIE”, released her debut studio album, Layali. The record stands as a deeply personal statement exploring self-discovery, femininity, healing from heartbreak, and connecting with ancestral roots. As the daughter of an Egyptian mother who does not speak Arabic, the singer uses music as a universal medium to bridge her Western upbringing with her North African heritage.
The album’s sonic framework blends alternative R&B, neo-soul, and traditional Arabic music. Arrangements feature the oud, Middle Eastern percussion, and sweeping string sections inspired by Egyptian icon Umm Kulthum, alongside field recordings of family members’ voices. By rejecting rigid stylistic structures, Somaya crafts a cinematic, atmospheric landscape that centers emotional vulnerability, intuition, and authentic self-expression. The album’s physical release event is scheduled for September 16, 2026, at La Sala Rossa in Montreal.
